For this show, hosted by Hypha Studios, Open Collective will be exploring entropy and its tendency to allow things to dissolve into chaos. Open Collective believe that this reflects the idea of becoming integrated further into the local community, distributing and intermeshing into it. The exhibition will run from December 1st 2023 – 15th of February 2024. Open Collective will showcase, through unique lenses, how entropy dissipates our various practices, which are often site-specific. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to maximise the use of the space by creating works tailored to the venue.
PRESS RELEASE
As we move forward in time, the entropy of any system will always increase.
‘Entropy’ is an exhibition curated by Open Collective: eleven emerging artists who met at university with a desire to further their artistic practices and develop an engaged artistic community. The collective is interested in exploring the concept of entropy, the world’s natural tendency for chaos. In Greek, entropy describes ‘a transformation’. This has inspired us to transform the chaos of the neverending expansion of the 21st Century into meaningful experiences.
The exhibition considers these notions in a range of contexts delving into politics, ecology and the metaphysical. A strong component of our united interest is in the multiplicity of forms entropy can embody. Featuring painting, film, installation and performance based works, our range of experiences aim to represent this notion.
We aim to disperse our chaos through the local community, with a variety of workshops relating to our own practices. Some of these include: abstract form generation, creating an alter ego/alternate reality, painting natural forms, marionette making, themed life drawing, paper cutting & collage, and weaving using found materials.
‘Entropy’ occupies a disused shopping unit in Reading’s The Oracle shopping centre – 36 Minster Street. This exhibition is supported by Hypha Studios. For further information please see hyphastudios.com To keep up to date, follow our instagram: @open_collective_
