Actions on words

A tangible exploration into the vagueness of verbs;

Compilation of sculptures created in varying time frames

Through a combination of quick fire sculptures inspired by the works of Erwin Wurum and the relationship between the literal and metaphorical meaning of a set of verbs written by Richard Serra I begin to explore how I can weave sensory repetition or muscle memory into what something is and what something is not. Below is a list of the actions I carried out on my materials.

  • To curl
  • To fold
  • To mirror
  • To pierce
  • To scrunch
  • To secure
  • To tighten

In isolation, these verbs seem to have clear and definite results; one may have a predetermined visualisation of what a specific action looks like and therefore what the outcome will look like. I wanted to invite unexpected behaviours into this exercise. So, when manipulating the materials I allowed my fingertips to carry out these verbs as if they were orders unrelated to what my mind wanted them to be.
