Nothing is more liminal than the pathway of skin. What lies within it, and the how of the passage it creates. Something as continuous as the skin, with all its en-foldings and contours, its orifices and echos, is boundless. Yet the body is bound in its own skin.
What happens when skin is separated from the body it bounds. What new meanings are insinuated by its isolation and why does it become repulsive and disturbing once removed.
‘Skin may be the most sensitive and eloquent signifier of the body, and the organ most aligned with sight, but it is also so poorly described in the art historical literature that it can appear entirely blank.’ James Elkins, Pictures of the Body . Pain and Metamorphosis
